Pongal is the opener in our houses as far as fooding goes for the rest of the year. It’s the first official celebration of food and the rest of the year is galore with oh so many functions / festivals that will follow, where more food will follow.
But I have always thought that the spirit of Pongal is to be seen and felt only in the villages where people have ploughed and toiled for the morsel we eat in the luxury of the homes. But then, blame it on tradition! We cook pongal in the stainless steel vessel on the hob and am thinking this is all wrong, get the firewood and the pot!!I would have loved to be there and done that!!
